A boat brings you in the silence of morning. I sit in the tavern among faces I now know. Eating breakfast, drinking coffee. I nod hello, then recede into a need I cannot name. I am a counter of waves, diviner of ships. My heart is a skipping stone. Days here are flickers of fireflies.
I call up our last conversation, where I broke, where a ghost that sounded like me whispered the words. âPlease come. I cannot.â I am lost here on this island.
Huddled around the heat of my coffee, nodding at moons of faces as they pass me.
I am no one I know anymore.
